Philadelphia’s City Controller has tapped the financial services of Deloitte to conduct a forensic audit into the Sheriff’s Department, which was found fraught with flaws.

Controller Alan Butkovitz has requested to launch the forensic audit with auditors from Deloitte Financial Advisory Services after an investigation revealed major problems in the bookkeeping of Philadelphia’s Sheriff’s Department.

Butkovitz said the Sheriff’s Department badly needs in-depth and sophisticated auditing.

Butkovitz believes the auditors from Deloitte, which include former law enforcement officials, could help dig out the cause of the mess in the Sheriff’s Department.

“I think we are trying to figure out exactly what was done wrong over there and implicit in that would be a plan to assure that this doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Louis Pichini, former chief of the criminal division of the US Attorneys office in Philadelphia, will head the team to conduct the forensic audit, Butkovitz confirmed.
