Learn How to Build Your CPA Practice Like Sid Kess

When it comes to CPAs, there aren’t many personal brands more powerful than the one built by Sid Kess. A larger-than-life figure in the accounting profession, Kess is well known for his books, workshops, and unmatched network of contacts – and now he’s ready to share some of his best tips for nurturing a successful practice.

Kess is a former national tax partner at KPMG Peat Marwick and the inspiration for an American Institute of CPAs award that honors excellence in continuing education. He’s spoken to more than 720,000 people in lectures, been quoted by the nation’s top business publications, and shared many secrets for success in his celebrated career.

Now those lessons have been collected in a new book from the AICPA, “The Sid Kess Approach: 60 Years of Best Practices in Tax, Education, Careers and Life,” which includes dozens of anecdotes from CPAs he’s helped along the way.

Kess currently serves as an advisor for one of the nation’s leading tax controversy law firms, but continues to sponsor workshops, serve on committees, and perform an ad hoc role as career planner, mentor and friend to countless people within the accounting profession.

“People have their own goals, and I don’t suggest that others follow my approach just because it has worked for me,” Kess writes. “But I do suggest that if you care about others and try to help others, you will succeed beyond your greatest aspirations, because relationships matter.”

Among the advice Kess gives in the book:
· Get a quality education, one that doesn’t end with a college degree. Lifelong learning is a key to success.
· Find your niche. Specialization is the way to make your mark.
· Develop your personal brand. If you have expertise, teach. Provide thought leadership.
· Be creative. Ideas are a powerful way to win notice.
· Build relationships. Networking matters.
· Give back. Over-deliver to people you care about.
